If you believe the Daybreak Herald-Gazette's stories, the Box exists for the good of mankind. The Creatures have humanity's best interests in mind, and they will disassemble the Box as soon as the air outside is safe to breathe. Dominic Mitchell doesn’t buy it. The human race has lived inside the Box for centuries, with no apparent progress. He knows the Daybreak Herald-Gazette is spinning the truth, but he’s never had proof. Until now.

I found Taylor Hohulin's "The Box is Protection, Not Prison" to be a good, quick read. It kept me engaged. I liked the main character. It seemed a little like "Wool," part way through, but didn't end up that way. My only problem was that the ending wasn't particularly revelatory or cathartic. It seemed rushed and didn't answer a lot of questions.

That's just part of this dystopia, though, I think. There aren't quick or easy answers. I think the ending is open for interpretation and that's part of the point.

I do feel like there is some allegory to life that the author had in mind that I'm missing.

I really liked the book and I would gladly recommend it to readers who like to think and ponder books long after they're done reading them. It would also make for good conversations with friends who also have read the book. I gave it 4 stars because I'm still processing all of it. I might change it to a 5 later on.

Disclosure: I did not receive anything for my review and I bought the book with my own money.

A perfect metaphorical tale about reality and the nature of it as filtered through humanity. Had to finish it once I started it. Great story.
The story keeps you interested and the ending leaves you pondering. How do we decide what's true amidst and information permeated culture? And what really matters in the end?
Really solid short story. I would absolutely read a longer version that explored this world more, perhaps told from multiple perspectives. I was fascinated by the blind obedience of this culture, the way that almost everyone was so happy to settle for the meager dramas their newspapers wrote for them. I was left with a lot of questions and would love to have some of them answered in a full novel. Overall though, I really enjoyed reading this piece.
This is a fun, fast-paced story with a timely message about the nature of humanity. There are wonderful sci-fi elements that set up an interesting world and lend a sense of misdirection to what I felt was the overall point of the story (as the reader... I won't presume to speak for the author). This was an excellent lunch-time read that I would recommend to anyone looking for some time well spent. I was engaged and interested the whole time, though as is often the case with short stories I was left with a lot of questions about the main character and his background (but that could easily turn this into a novel!). What I think Hohulin has really captured here, without giving anything away, is something of our human reaction to reality. Our lives, especially in a media saturated world, our a constant clash between huge worldwide events and mundane daily tasks. Our reactions are often underwhelming compared to the usual dramatic upheaval usually seen in fiction, but I think the main character reacts in a very believable, and ultimately hopeful, manner to his circumstances.
